LINKLINE: (LINKLINE.EXE)
Written by Patrick Bass
(Originally published in the Aug. '86 ANTIC.
Enhanced ST version is brand new.)
LinkLine is a PAIR of programs which let you quickly transfer files
between information between your 8-bit and your ST computers.
LinkLine will quickly and reliably transfer programs, text files,
picture files -- any type of file shorter than 33K (about 270 5-1/4"
disk sectors). It's easy and it's fast (4800 baud, about sixteen times
the speed of an Atari 1030 modem)!
HOW TO GET LINKLINE
Use XMODEM to download *both* LINKLINE programs. Use a modem
program for your 8-bit computer to download the 8-bit side of LinkLine,
and download the ST side with an ST modem program.
USING LINKLINE
You need:
A - 8-bit Atari computer
B - An Atari 850 Interface Module
with a modem cable (RS-232 to D-9.)
C - Null modem connector
D - Gender changer (if required)
E - Any Atari ST computer

Sample porting configuration
WALK-THROUGH DEMO
1) Rename your ST version of LinkLine to "LINKLINE.ACC". Rename the
8-bit version to "AUTORUN.SYS".
2) Turn both computers off. Connect the two computers together by
plugging the ST end of the Null Modem cable into the 25 Pin RS-232
connector on the back of the ST, and the 8-bit Atari end into Port 1 of
the 850 Interface. Now insert your LinkLine disks, and turn both
computers on again.
3) At the ST, point to the "Desk" item and click on the menu choice
called "LINKLINE".
4) To transfer a file from the 8-bit Atari into the ST, choose the
LOAD A FILE option and type in the name of the file you want to
transfer. LINKLINE will read the file off the 8-bit disk, and copy it
to an ST disk.
5) To transfer a file from the ST into the Atari 8-bit, choose the
SAVE A FILE option and type in the name of the ST file to transfer.
LinkLine will read the file in and then prompt you for the name to call
it on the Atari 8-bit disk. When you type in the destination filename
and click on OK, LinkLine will copy the desired file from the ST onto
the 8-bit disk.
ADVANCED USE
LinkLine will copy any file under (roughly) 33K long. It cannot
tell the difference between a picture file and a text file. Atari 8-bit
word processors use a special character, number #155, to mark where
lines of text end. Atari ST computers use a standard carriage
return/line feed at the end of each line. Just before LinkLine
transfers a file, it will ask you if you wish to convert Atari 8-bit
End-Of-Line (#155) characters to Atari ST CR/LF pairs.
If you are transferring a *text* file, use the EOL and CR/LF
translations.
Some ST word processors place a CR/LF pair at the end of each line
onscreen, with a double CR/LF pair between paragraphs. Most Atari 8-bit
word processors want their EOL characters only between paragraphs. To
account for this, LinkLine will ask if you desire any "single CR/LFs"
stripped out of the file. Again, if you are transferring a *text* file
from the ST into the Atari 8-bit, and aren't satisfied with the results,
try stripping all single CR/LFs.
That's it. You're done.
